Tracing patterns onto fabric

To put a sewing pattern onto fabric, you can use a few different methods. I like to swap between these methods depending on the pattern design. For simple pattern pieces, I like to mark around the pattern with fabric markers. For smaller patterns (especially those with lines inside the pattern) I like to use stabiliser - this works great for embroidery designs too.

Fabric markers

Fabric markers come in various forms; chalk sticks, pencils, erasable pens. They are great for drawing around a pattern piece.

Transfer / carbon paper

Sandwich the transfer paper in between your paper pattern and fabric and use a tracing wheel or pen to mark the pattern onto the fabric.

Stabiliser

Put a thin stabiliser on top of the pattern and trace. You can also try printing directly onto the stabiliser. (I do this by sticking a piece of stabiliser to some paper (to make it stiff) with spray adhesive and print as normal). The stabiliser can be be attached to the fabric with (I use spray esive) and sewn in with the project.
